Reflecting on his journey, Madonsela recalls his early passion for drawing, which began during his primary school years. However, growing up in a community where art was not recognized as a viable career, he initially struggled to understand what it truly meant to be an artist. It was only after high school that things started to make sense for him. He pursued printmaking at the artist proof studio for four years, but his focus has shifted towards drawing and painting.
Madonsela firmly believes that artists have a significant role to play in shaping the world and influencing society. He sees art as a powerful tool for storytelling, one that can transcend the politics of the world and bring about healing and positive change. By honestly expressing their own stories, artists have the ability to set the tone and improve the way we live.
Throughout history, tragedy has often disrupted societies and altered our perception of normalcy. However, Thokozani acknowledges that amidst these challenges, the human spirit remains resilient, continuing to beat with unwavering determination.
