If you love art and culture, the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg is the place to be! Right now, they are hosting an exhibition called Abafa(ba)zi, which runs until February 28, 2025. This exhibition is about sharing stories, celebrating identities, and reclaiming space for African and diasporic women.
Abafa(ba)zi allows attendees to think deeply about cultural heritage and representation. It shines a light on the experiences of women from Africa and its diaspora, encouraging everyone to reflect on their own stories and connections. The exhibition is designed to be interactive, with a series of exciting events that allow people of all ages to join in the conversation.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the Exhibition Walkabout with Curator Thina Miya. On January 17 and February 14, 2025, you can join Thina for a guided tour of Abafa(ba)zi. She will share insights about the artists and the ideas behind the exhibition. Plus, you can enjoy some tea while you explore!
Another fun event is the Beading Workshop for Adults and Children on February 1, 2025. This workshop is a great way for families to come together and learn about African beadwork. Participants will create their own beaded pieces while discovering the meanings behind different designs. It’s a wonderful chance to connect with each other and learn about cultural traditions. Attendance is free, but it’s best to RSVP by emailing hoaf@goethe.de.
