Thato Toeba, the 2025 FNB Art Prize winner, will open their solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
Toeba is the first artist from Lesotho to receive the FNB Art Prize, which is now in its 15th iteration. The award has become a platform for recognising contemporary artistic practices from across the African continent while giving recipients opportunities to develop their work, reach new audiences and engage with major cultural institutions.
Previous recipients include Kudzanai Chiurai, Portia Zvahera, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Bronwyn Katz and Lindokuhle Sobekwa.
The 2025 jury recognised Toeba for the clarity, formal maturity and considered pace of their practice. Working across collage, photomontage and assemblage, the artist explores identity, power, history and representation through layered visual compositions.
The exhibition marks the next stage of a practice that uses found imagery and constructed compositions to consider how histories and identities are produced, remembered and represented.
Toeba’s presentation at JAG also extends the impact of the FNB Art Prize beyond its announcement at the annual FNB Art Joburg fair, placing the winning artist’s work within one of Johannesburg’s major public art institutions.
The exhibition opens to the public at 13:00 on Sunday, 6 September 2026, at the Johannesburg Art Gallery. A media preview will take place at 11:00 on the same day.
