Qhamanande Maswana, who is well known for his colourful and imaginative portraits has caught our attention. With his attention to detail, Qhamanande effortlessly combines reality and imagination, shedding light on the beauty, challenges and spirituality of Africa. His work has been showcased in art galleries and exhibitions, making him a rising star in the art industry.
Born in King William’s Town, Eastern Cape, Qhamanande’s love for art began at Lovedale College, where he studied art. He walked away with a Diploma in Fine Art from the university of Fort Hare, Alice, in 2015. His passion for art led him to be commissioned for the university’s centenary celebration, showcasing talent.
His work primarily focuses on conveying the struggles and issues surrounding beauty, particularly within economically depressed communities. Inspired by the people he interacts with and his surroundings, he portrays their strength and beauty.

In his paintings, he often uses purple hues to represent royalty, luxury, power, wealth, creativity, wisdom, dignity and magic. By doing so, he aims to recreate the image of these individuals in a new light, highlighting the royalty he sees within them.
Maswana combines acrylic and oil paints, to create imagery that imparts hidden folklore, cultural traditions and spirituality for the gazers. His artwork serves as a bridge between the past and present, breathing life into long- forgotten stories and customs.

Like most artists, Qhamanande draws inspiration from his rural upbringing and deep respect for culture, customs, and nature, Maswana’s art reflects the strength and descendancy of his people.
His artwork has been displayed at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Ann Bryant Art Gallery, Galerie NOKO, and MM Art House, among others. These platforms have allowed him to reach a wider audience and allowed him to share his perspective on African beauty and spirituality.
