Adele Van Heerden is an artist who creates work of art inspired by nature. Her latest series, called “Prism,” includes nine pieces that reflect her experiences during a special time in Biesenthal, Germany. While she was there, she was recovering from an injury, which allowed her to slow down and really connect with her surroundings.

During her stay, Adele spent a lot of time by Lake Wukensee. She observed the water, took photographs, and drew what she saw. This lake became a big part of her art. The title “Prism” is about how light bends and changes when it touches water. Adele wanted to show how important it is to be in the moment and appreciate the beauty around us.

Adele believes that art comes from paying attention to the little things in life. She said, “I want to see the beautiful and extraordinary hidden in the mundane.” This idea is at the heart of her work. She uses colours and shapes to express her feelings about water and light.

In her series, she often hints at the presence of swimmers, including herself, but focuses more on the water and its surroundings. In “Prism,” she even painted swans that live in the lake, displaying the joy she felt swimming near them.

Adele sees water as a container that holds many meanings. She explains, “Water takes the shape of whatever container it is in.” This idea shows how water can represent different things in our lives. It can be calm or moving, clear or cloudy. For Adele, water teaches us about change and identity.

Her artwork combines different techniques, like pastel and gouache, and she often experiments with new styles. Each piece in “Prism” tells a story about her time at the lake and the lessons she learned from nature.
