As most may know, Esther Mahlangu is a celebrated painter who has showcased her work worldwide. Learning this art from her grandmother and mother, Esther was part of a tradition where Ndebele women used paintings to decorate houses. As a result, her work shows geometric patterns, often using triangles, symmetry and bright colours. These designs, sticking out with marked black lines on a white background, are much more than spontaneous bursts of creativity.
Esther has expanded her art to various mediums beyond the usual canvases. She painted a BMW 525i Art Car with Ndebele patterns in 1991, and since then, her designs have touched airplanes, cars and even sneakers! Her collaboration with brands like Fiat, Belvedere Vodka and BMW has brought her style of art to new areas, including fashion and interior design.
