Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is thrilled to announce its collaboration with the acclaimed South African artist, Athi-Patra Ruga, ahead of its Gala event in 2024. This collaboration promises to add a layer of aesthetic depth to an already enchanting experience.
The Gala, which marks the beginning of Cape Town Art Week, will showcase an exclusive art auction featuring a line-up of internationally recognized artists. This auction, facilitated by Strauss & Co, aims to raise funds to support the museum’s curatorial and education programming.

Artists such as William Kentridge, Senzeni Marasela, Mary Evans, Zandile Tshabalala, Unathi Mkonto, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Abdoulaye Konate, and Alfredo Jaar have donated their works for this noble cause. Additionally, South African artist Cinga Samson has made a generous monetary donation to support the museum’s work.
The Gala’s overall scenography and key design elements will draw inspiration from Athi-Patra Ruga’s rich artistic oeuvre. Ruga, brings a unique perspective that will elevate the event to new heights. Guests can expect an evening filled with artistic brilliance.
During the Gala, Zeitz MOCAA will also present its Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Awards for Artistic Excellence and Philanthropic Achievement. These awards aim to recognize exceptional individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the art ecology in Africa. It is a moment to honour the visionaries who are shaping the contemporary art landscape on the continent.

The Gala will be hosted by the renowned South African model and businesswoman, Jo-Ann Strauss, who will bring her expertise as the emcee. The evening will feature exclusive performances by South African singer and songwriter Simphiwe Dana and Capetonian artist Nobuhle Ashanti, adding a touch of musical enchantment to the event.
