Cromwell Ngobeni, an artist from Limpopo is an example of how the power of the mind can triumph over challenging circumstances. Despite humble beginnings and a five-year stint at KFC, Ngobeni never let go of the life he envisioned for himself.
Through years of dedication, he honed his talents and built relationships within the South African art world. Today, he is the proud owner of the Cromwell Ngobeni Art Studio, a space dedicated to his dreams and the dreams of his community.
Ngobeni’s artwork revolves around the themes of innocence, beauty and the vastness of the Black child’s inner world. He believes in the freedom that comes with a young mind, the freedom to act first and learn later, and the freedom to pursue one’s heart’s desires. In his art, Ngobeni tells his own story and the stories he sees and experiences in everyday life.

The central focus of Ngobeni’s work is children. Growing up in a village surrounded by kids his age, his own childhood memories heavily influence his art. He relates to the stories of Black children and their pure intentions and honest expressions. Children, in his view embody the essence of freedom and uninhibited creativity, which he seeks to capture in his artwork.
One striking aspect of Cromwell’s art is his deliberate use of colours. While he primarily employs charcoal black as the main colour, he is careful not to let it overpower the intricate details of his images. When colour is introduced, it serves as a complementary element, enhancing the impact of the black and the details. Cromwell continues to experiment with colour, always maintaining the same intensity and attention to detail that define his work.
