Kutlwano Monyai is an artist who is showcasing her first solo exhibition. She gets inspiration from her family background and uses it to tell stories from her mother’s side of the family.

The exhibition is called Lefeloboiketlo which means ‘A place of rest’. This title represents the idea of collecting moments from different generations and creating a space for transformation and relaxation.
Kutlwano’s art focuses on the hard work that women do in society. She uses traditional techniques like weaving and braiding to honour the history of women’s experiences while also looking towards the future.
Growing up in Limpopo and now living in Pretoria, Kutlwano has completed her studies in Fine and Applied Arts. She uses her skills to create sculptures and paintings that remind her of the everyday tasks she did with her mother, like doing laundry and cooking.
By using plastic materials, Kutlwano captures memories of her upbringing and the important role that women play in the economy and the environment.
