South African music continues to blur the lines between genres as Lia Butler and XDuppy come together in the latest episode of Mashup Masters, combining the smoothness of Neo-Zulu with the infectious energy of Amapiano.
The fourth episode of Season 2 sees the two artists step outside their usual musical spaces to create a collaboration that brings their distinct influences into conversation.
Two Sounds, One Collaboration
For Lia Butler, the episode presented an opportunity to experiment with a sound outside her usual creative territory.
“I loved being able to step outside my comfort zone and explore a sound I wouldn’t normally make,” Butler says. “It was a really exciting experience. Working with XDuppy showed me how naturally different sounds can come together when you’re open to experimenting.”
XDuppy similarly approached the collaboration as an opportunity to explore the versatility of South African music.
“Neo-Zulu and Amapiano come from different places, but there’s a natural connection between them. Working with Lia pushed me creatively, and I think that energy comes through in the music,” he says.
What Happens When Genres Meet?
At the centre of Mashup Masters is the idea that artists do not have to remain within the boundaries of the sounds they are known for.
Rather than simply placing two genres side by side, the series creates a space for artists to explore how their individual influences can interact, overlap and produce something unexpected.
That approach is particularly relevant within South Africa’s constantly evolving music landscape, where genres continue to influence one another and artists increasingly move between different sounds and audiences.
Mashup Masters Season 2
Season 2 of Mashup Masters brings together 10 South African artists across five genre mashups, continuing the series’ focus on collaboration and experimentation.
The latest episode adds another combination to that musical conversation, pairing Lia Butler’s Neo-Zulu influences with XDuppy’s Amapiano sensibilities.
The resulting collaboration is another example of what can happen when artists are given the freedom to step outside their established creative identities and see what exists on the other side.
