Sthenjwa’s process is a labour of love, as each work he produces is meticulously hand-carved and painted. His preferred medium, a 12mm MDF Supawood block, is transformed into a sculptural canvas that serves as a stunning backdrop for his creations. This hybrid art-object is a testament to his skill and the months of effort poured into each piece.
Drawing inspiration from his African roots, Sthenjwa finds a deep appreciation for the natural elements in his work. He explains, ” In African culture, we hold a deep appreciation for natural elements, which is why I primarily work with MDF or Supawood as it originates from nature. “His connection to his heritage was further strengthened when he discovered that his grandfather crafted traditional wooden trays called Isithebe, which were used during family gatherings.
