Strauss & Co, is hosting a special auction featuring works by over a dozen artists who have been connected to the Venice Biennale. The auction includes pieces by well-known artists such as Irma Stern and Zanele Muholi.
One of the highlights of the auction is a portrait by Irma Stern called “The Smoker,” which was created in 1945. This piece is expected to fetch between R15 – R17 million. Zanele Muholi, who gained fame at the 2019 Venice Biennale, has two self portrait photos in the auction as well.

Other artists featured in the auction include Kudzanai Chiurai, Maggie Laubser, and Gerard Sekoto, all of whom have been part of the Venice Biennale in the past. The auction will also showcase works by artists like Lisa Brice, Marlene Dumas, and Sthenjwa Luthuli, who are recognized in the contemporary art world.
The auction will not only focus on established artists but also on emerging talents like Banele Khoza, Talia Ramkilawan, and Mostaff Muchawaya. In addition to the live auction, there will be an online Day Sale featuring more contemporary painters and ceramic artists.
