Baba Tjeko, is a multidisciplinary artist who has made a name for himself in the creative industry. Born in the Free State, Tjeko is mainly know for his geometric Ditema works, which he brings to life through painting, drawing and illustration. He has worked with brands such as MINI Cooper, Stella Artois and Nespresso.
Tjeko shared some insights into how he fell in love with creating, and the process behind his work. He recalls his earliest encounter with art at the age of 12 when he discovered books about art at his local library in the tumahole township.

These books introduced him to influential artists such as Gerard Sekoto, George Pemba and Dumile Feni, who looked like him and gained international recognition for their work. Inspired by their stories, Tjeko was driven to work harder and make his mark on the global art scene.
His creative process is fuelled by a variety of sources. Whether it’s a song, a documentary or a colour palette he comes across, he finds that any emotional connection can spark the inspiration needed to begin his journey. This openness to diverse influences allows him to continually evolve and grow as an artist.

As his work has taken shape over the years, Tjeko believes it has not changed, but rather evolved alongside his personal growth and wisdom. Initially, his focus was on self-expression, but now he aims to tell not only his own story but also the story of his continent. His art encompasses the past, present, and future, contributing to a narrative that extends far beyond himself.
Operating in both the realms of visual arts and advertising, Tjeko finds it easier to strike a balance as an independent artist. Without restrictions or external influences, he sees both worlds as opportunities to share his unique perspective and push the African narrative. Authentic art, in his view, has the power to create genuine emotional connections that resonate with people.
