For many creatives, photography begins as a passion before it becomes a profession. A camera becomes a way to experiment, document the world around them, and develop a unique perspective. However, turning that passion into a sustainable creative career requires more than technical ability. It requires understanding storytelling, building a creative eye, developing a personal style, and learning how to navigate the business side of the industry.

That is the space the Eckollective Academy is returning to explore.

Led by Siyabonga Nhleko, popularly known by pseudonym Jr Ecko, alongside industry partners, the academy is opening its doors again with a focus on helping aspiring photographers and creatives develop the skills needed to grow within the industry.

Building The Next Generation Of Visual Storytellers

The 2026 edition of the Eckollective Academy will welcome 30 students who are ready to take photography seriously, both as a creative practice and as a business.

The programme is designed around the different elements that shape a photographer’s journey, including photography, videography, creativity, storytelling, building a visual eye, and understanding how to position yourself within the creative industry.

For emerging photographers, learning how to use a camera is only one part of developing a career. The ability to understand composition, communicate ideas visually, create meaningful work and build relationships within the industry all play a role in shaping a creative practice.

The academy aims to create a space where creatives can develop these skills while learning from people who understand the realities of the industry.

Photography As A Career, Not Just A Skill

The creative industry continues to evolve, creating new opportunities for photographers and visual storytellers across different fields. From fashion and advertising to music, film and digital media, photography has become an important part of how culture is documented and experienced.

For many young creatives, the challenge lies in understanding how to move from creating work to building something sustainable.

The Eckollective Academy places emphasis on this transition by exploring photography alongside the business elements that support a creative career. Understanding how to present your work, build your network, communicate your value and create opportunities for yourself are all important parts of becoming a working creative.

Developing A Creative Eye

One of the biggest differences between taking photographs and becoming a photographer is perspective.

The academy focuses on helping creatives strengthen the way they see the world around them. Storytelling, creativity and visual thinking are central parts of the programme, encouraging students to think beyond simply capturing an image and instead consider the meaning, emotion and intention behind their work.

This approach reflects the changing nature of photography today, where photographers are often expected to understand multiple parts of the creative process, from concept development to final execution.

Creating Access For Emerging Creatives

Opportunities within creative industries can often feel difficult to access, especially for young creatives who are still trying to understand where they fit.

Programmes like the Eckollective Academy create opportunities for learning, connection and collaboration, giving emerging photographers a chance to develop alongside others who share similar ambitions.

Through mentorship, practical learning and industry insights, the academy aims to help creatives move with more confidence as they build their careers.

Registration for the Eckollective Academy opens on 1 July 2026, with only 30 seats available.

For aspiring photographers and visual creatives looking to grow their skills, expand their knowledge and understand the industry beyond the camera, the academy offers an opportunity to take the next step in their creative journey.
