In a world where technology and social media dominate our lives, it becomes increasingly important to preserve our cultural traditions and rituals. South African artist Mondli Mbhele, has made it his mission to explore the transformative power of art and its ability to evoke a sense of identity and belonging. Through his captivating fabric collages, Mbhele invites us to reflect on the value of our traditions and the delicate balance between our past, present, and future.
Mondli Mbhele’s artistic journey began with a one-year visual art program at the Bat Centre, followed by attending the Velobala Weekend Classes hosted by the Durban University of Technology. As a member of the Amasosha Art movement, he found a supportive community of fellow artists who shared his passion for promoting professionalism and solidarity. Mbhele’s dedication and talent were recognized when he won the prestigious Sasol New Signatures Art Competition in 2022 with his thought-provoking piece titled “Iphasi nesiphesheli.”

Mbhele’s upcoming solo exhibition, set to open in September as part of the 2023 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition, focuses on the theme of transformation in the lives of South Africa’s youth. Titled “Ingoma Yothando” or “Song of Love” in isiZulu, the exhibition draws inspiration from traditional dances and their accompanying music. These dances, performed during significant ceremonies and events, act as a bridge between the past and the present, providing a sense of balance and connection to the community’s roots.
