The Lion King movie is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The story of a young lion cub named Simba has caught the attention of South Africa and around the world since 1994.
The movie tells the tale of Simba, who is destined to become the king of the Pride Lands, but is led astray by his uncle Scar. With the help of his friends Timon and Pumbaa, Simba learns about responsibility and returns to reclaim his rightful place in the “Circle of Life.”
Over the years, The Lion King has evolved beyond the big screen. In 1997, a successful musical version premiered on Broadway, featuring South African performers. The musical later visited South Africa in 2007 and became a favourite among theatre enthusiasts.

Two more animated features, The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride and The Lion King 1½, were released in subsequent years. In 2017, a new animated series called The Lion Guard delighted kids and families, airing in both English and Zulu.
In 2019, a groundbreaking live-action adaptation brought The Lion King to a new generation. Directed by Jon Favreau and featuring South African actor Dr John Kani as Rafiki, the film became the highest-grossing movie in South Africa’s history.
